Net Zero 2050 Reality Check

Participating centers: GERICS/HEREON, KIT, GFZ, FZJ, HEREON, HZB, HZDR, UFZ

Contact: Fiona Köhnke

One result of the first phase of the Helmholtz Climate Initiative was a “pilot roadmap”, called the Netto-Null-2050 Wegweiser. This publication contains 127 recommendations for action to achieve carbon neutrality in Germany by 2050. More on Phase I

To accelerate the implementation of these recommendations, a "reality check" will be conducted for selected measures. It will involve various dialogue formats, including workshops, discussion panels, interviews and surveys with relevant stakeholders. The aim is to test the relevance and feasibility of the recommendations for action.

The stakeholder interactions will be conducted with a focus on three topics: (i) conversion of CO2 into energy carriers (Hereon), (ii) temporary and permanent storage of CO2 in the geological subsurface and in the building sector in construction materials (HZDR, GFZ, KIT), and (iii) peatland rewetting in the Potsdam region (GFZ, UFZ). The results will be summarized in a report that will serve as a basis for the implementation of demonstration and pilot projects.
