Heat and Health
Participating centers: UFZ, HMGU

During the first phase of the Helmholtz Climate Initiative, impacts of weather extremes on people's physical and mental health were assessed. The results have showed, among other things, that heat events exacerbate symptoms of cardiovascular and lung diseases and consequently increase mortality. More on Phase I.
The goal of the project “Health adaptation measures for the prevention of heat health effects” is to assess the impact of heat on the health of urban residents and to make predictions of heat-related health impacts, particularly for vulnerable populations.
The project will develop neighborhood-level risk maps that predict the effects of heat stress on the basis of not only air temperatures, but also of individual vulnerabilities and urban environment. This information will be used as the basis for developing an app that shows recommendations for individual health protection measures during the heat.
